REVIEWS

ALBUM OF THE WEEK – THE PRESS

“Ivey's melodic harmonica playing brings a melancholy air to the lovely Down by the River and gentle acoustic guitar provides the elegantly spare backdrop for Williams' timeless country ballad Old Heart which then soars gently on her backing vocals and strings.
There's a spiritual gentleness here (Two Pale Moons) and their voices weave between harmony and counterpoint, hers sometimes as much burred as beautiful, his distinctive Kiwi accent bringing an earthiness to the refined lyrics (So Far Away which has an almost-pop quality of sprightliness despite the downbeat tone).Sensitively understated arrangements are also the hallmarks here.”

FOUR & ½ STARS - GRAHAM REID – NZ HERALD

“The Neil Young croak of Charlotte Ivey's country harmonica and the rich, plaintive yawn of Delaney Davidson's lap steel are possibly the best sounds coming out of New Zealand at the moment – which is fitting because they're the most prominent backings to Ivey and fellow Tiny Liar Harley Williams' intimate, emotional, gripping lyrics and glorious up-front delivery.”

FOUR STARS – JAMES BELFIELD – SUNDAY STAR TIMES

“Lyttelton Records delivers another quality release, this time a seductive exploration of dark country-folk by Christchurch duo Charlotte Ivey and Harley Williams.”

FOUR STARS – JEFF HARFORD – OTAGO DAILY TIMES

“Folk duo, The Tiny Lies, follow up on their haunting debut EP, Trials, with a new album showcasing intricate acoustic guitar and sweet harmonising vocals. That sweetness and kiwi accents seem to aid the pair in exhuming noir themes of dark South Island towns on this album with a certain gentleness.
Both Charlotte Ivey and Harley Williams share vocal duties, sometimes taking a turnabout and sometimes uniting to create lush melodies like on 'The Walls Came Down' and the title track. The delicate vocal balance appears perfectly weighted on 'Bag of Bones' with Ivey taking the lead with her reedy tempos then being joined by Williams for rushing choruses. The pair counter-balance each other on stand-out 'Down by the River' with the same sweeping flow propped up by rhythmic guitar.”

8/10 – HAYDEN PYKE – UNDER THE RADAR

Co-produced by label boss Ben Edwards and backed by a talented roster of local talent (include Davidson on lap steel), The Tiny Lies’ first full length album is a richer sounding affair than their fine 2011 EP Trials, but is still seeped in the classic flavours of modern Americana. An obvious reference point is the Handsome Family, but the smoky drawl of Charlotte Ivey is much more to the fore here – there’s even a touch of Mazzy Star about tracks such as Bag Of Bones –  and is perfectly complemented by the drier vocal tones of Harley Williams.
Standouts include the Mariachi-infused title track, the ghostly country noir of The Walls Came Down and the trad ballad Forgiveness, which recalls early Son Volt, although you would be hard pressed to find a weak moment on The Oaks They Will Bow.
